I have been writing science fiction only book reviews for twelve years. I try to find new writers as well as established writers of science fiction and give an honest review of their stories. If you are new to the genre and want to read a good science fiction story for the first time, try one of my Four or Five Star ratings. I put all my reviews on Goodreads at this link.
I only give a book Five Stars if it is truly original and affected me emotionally. By this I mean I got goose bumps, laughed out loud, brought to tears or shocked by an unexpected twist in the storyline. This takes good writing, interesting characters and a great story line or idea. I hope you agree once you read the story.
I have included one of my Five Star book reviews below as an example:
This review is on The 5TH WAVE by Rick Yancey. It is the first book in the series I have read by this author. I am amazed at this story and the author’s writing style. The book has been made into a movie.
The story is told in episodes dealing with an alien attack that really begins in 1995. There are five Waves; The 1ST Wave: Lights Out, The 2ND WAVE: Surf’s Up, The 3RD WAVE: Pestilence and The 4TH WAVE: Silencer. Then there is The 5TH WAVE! The characters are introduced and followed in Books I through XIII.
Book I The Last Historian begins with a young girl named Cassie, short for Cassiopeia. The aliens have attacked and she calls them the “Others”. Before she was separated from her father and little brother, Sammy, they lived happily together in a normal little town. Now, Cassie thinks she is the last human alive and is barely surviving in the woods. How she got there is all in Book I.
Book II Wonderland introduces a 17 year old boy who wants to be called Zombie. It’s because he is dying in a military base from a plague called The Red Death. The Commander of the base is Lieutenant Colonel Alexander Vosch. If the kid survives, he will join the fight against the aliens.
In Book III Silencer, Cassie is about to die from a gunshot wound from the hunter. It doesn’t look good for the “last human” on Earth.
Book IV Mayfly, Cassie wakes up in a house after she nearly died in a snowstorm. She is being cared for by a new character named Evan. He found her and brought her to his house. He helps her heal from her wound.
In Book V The Winnowing, Sammy is on his way to a military base run by Commander Vosch. The human survivors must be protected if humanity has any chance at surviving at all.
Book VI The Human Clay, Zombie survives the plague and is in training to become a soldier. They all want vengeance on the aliens, once they find them.
Book VII The Heart To Kill deals with Cassie and Evan. Evan plans to help Cassie find Sammy and flee the base.
In Book VIII The Spirit Of Vengence, Zombie is leading a group of young soldiers on a mission to find the aliens and kill them. At some point Zombie figures out the truth about the aliens and what The 5TH WAVE is all about.
Books IX through XIII build in climax until the end of the story. Well, not entirely the end because the story continues in a sequel.
I give this story Five Stars because the story was hard to put down and the writing style is excellent. This is science fiction at its best. It is masterfully written and entertaining for all ages. I look forward to reading the second sequel called The Infinite Sea, and watching the movie when it arrives.
Keep reading good science fiction and let me know when you find an interesting novel or author.
